Knockout mutant mice lacking this receptor exhibit decreased anxiety, increased aggression, and augmented alcohol and cocaine consumption compared to controls. 5-HT1B receptors have been found to control areas of the human brain involved in migraine pain, bipolar disorder, and obsessive compulsive disorder. The 5-HT1B receptor has been reported to be expressed in a variety of neurons predominantly in the central nervous system. It has been suggested that Human 5-HT1B receptors are located somatodendritically on GABAergic and peptidergic caudate-putamen neurons which project to the substantia nigra and globus pallidus, where these receptors are presynaptic. 5-HT1B expression has also been seen in heart, blood vessels, and eye.
