These neuron-specific filaments are the major constituents of the axonal cytoskeleton (1). NFs are composed of three major proteins; NF-H, NF-L and NF-M and the ratio of each protein changes during neuronal development. NF-H is the heavy molecular weight protein (200 kDa), NF-M the medium (160 kDa) and NF-L the light protein (68kDa) (2). Phosphorylation of the NF-H tail domain modulates neurofilament transport, dynamics and organization within the axon. Accumulation of the protein or mutations in NF-H is observed during the progression of numerous neurological diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (3).
